Psychology and Counseling
Life can be overwhelming. This can be the result of many things: studies, relationships, sexual concerns, office life, and retirement are just to name a few of the challenges we all face on a daily basis. Each individual and each situation that we encounter is unique to us, so it requires different strategies to negotiate through it.
NMH Psychology Unit
The Psychology Unit at Nawinna Medicare Hospital was founded ten years ago in 2011 with the initiative of Mrs. Chamalee Ahangama, Senior Psychological Counselor and the guidance of Dr. Sarath Rathnayake. The psychology unit is named ‘MindSPA’ with the concept of cleansing and healing minds to reenergize individuals towards achieving their self-actualization needs.
There is a misconception that ‘counselling is for people who are mentally ill’. NO! Counselling is not only for mentally ill people. There are times that any of us may need some extra support to handle and go through rough situations in our day to day lives. Some such situations may include;
- Inter-personal relationship problems, marriage problems or loss of a loved one
- work related stress
- phobias (fear of crowds, insects, germs, heights, etc.)
- having harmful addictions (alcohol, smoking, harmful substances, porn, games, etc.)
- problems of children (curiosity/confusion during adolescent age, learning difficulties or exam stress, etc.)
- gender identity issues
- sexual dysfunctions
- suffering with a terminal illness (Cancer, AIDS, etc.)
- having illnesses with no medical explanation
- feeling lonely, isolated, helpless or hopeless
- or simply when PEOPLE NEED SOME ONE TO HEAR THEM OUT
Benefits of Psychological Counselling
- Confidential, non-judgmental and therapeutic talk time
- Gain insights of difficult situations and realize the best alternatives to deal with such situations
- Identify self-actualization goals and focus on fulfilling them
- Focus towards personal growth through improved emotional control, coping skills, time management skills, stress management skills, and practicing relaxation techniques
- Improve inter-personal relationships
- Recognize unresolved problems that keep individuals demotivated
